2020 Recap

Safe Water Voters had an outstanding 2020 election cycle. We raised thousands of dollars for two water champs: Sen. Gary Peters (D-MI) and Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV). We are proud to announce that both of these Senators won their reelection campaigns, giving Safe Water Voters a 100% victory rate!

About Sen. Gary Peters:

Because of Gary Peter’s extensive work on water infrastructure including his heroic work during the Flint crisis and continuing to this day, we are proud to endorse him for Senate in 2020. Peters has championed clean, safe, reliable and affordable drinking water since Day 1. Like a true midwesterner, he worked quietly, behind the scenes to get bipartisan support for an aid package in response to the Flint Water Crisis as well as nation-wide reforms to make sure all communities were protected in the future. He has also led the way in protecting the Great Lakes - the source of drinking water for about 40 million Americans.

In his own words: “While I’m proud that the Senate was able to come together to provide initial federal funding to help Flint replace its lead pipes – the community needs continued support going forward. I am committed to doing everything in my power to ensure the people of Flint are made whole…” said Sen. Peters. “We cannot allow the failures of leadership that led to Flint’s devastating crises ever be repeated again.”

About Sen. Shelley Moore Capito:

As the top Republican on the Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee on the Senate’s Environment and Public Works Committee, Capito has been a fierce and effective champion for her constituents. From advocating for stronger protections from PFAS in drinking water, to providing support for small, rural water utilities, and protecting source water in the Chesapeake Bay watershed while supporting West Virginia’s economy, she has a long and impressive list of accomplishments in the water space.

In her own words: “West Virginians deserve reliable infrastructure that protects access to clean water. Improvements to West Virginia’s water infrastructure are a major priority of mine through my work as Chairman of the EPW Subcommittee on Transportation and Infrastructure,” said Senator Capito

The events Safe Water Voters had for both Sens Peters and Capito allowed donors to speak directly to these leaders on water issues personally concerning to them. Look for more events—for both Democrats and Republicans—in both 2021 and 2022!
